Hope & Cope is pleased to announce the appointment of Romain Rigal as its new Executive Director, effective May 1, 2025. A visionary healthcare leader with a track record of impact in research, advocacy, and nonprofit transformation, Mr. Rigal brings over 20 years of experience dedicated to improving outcomes for patients facing chronic and life-altering illnesses.
Trained as a pharmacist in France, with graduate degrees in project management and business administration, Mr. Rigal has held senior roles at the Canadian Cancer Society, Parkinson Québec, and major hospital research centres. His leadership is distinguished by an ability to blend clinical insight, data-driven strategy, and deep compassion for those he serves. He has led teams through significant transformations, championed access to care, and helped secure critical rights for patients, including the landmark recognition of Parkinson’s disease as an occupational illness in Quebec.
Mr. Rigal will assume the leadership of Hope & Cope from Interim Executive Director Sara Saber-Freedman, who has led the organization with dedication and vision through a year-long transition.
“Romain is an exceptional leader whose energy and vision align perfectly with Hope & Cope’s mission and the values of our founder, the late Sheila Kussner,” said Barry Pascal, Hope & Cope Board Chair. “His commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and patient-centred care will be a tremendous asset to the organization and to the communities we serve.”
Under Mr. Rigal’s leadership, Hope & Cope will continue to expand its impact through forward-thinking services while remaining grounded in the peer-based, psychosocial model that has made it a pillar of support for people living with cancer.
“It is a true honour to join Hope & Cope,” said Mr. Rigal. “I look forward to building on its incredible legacy by continuing to develop evidence-based programs that empower and support those affected by cancer. Together, we will continue to lead with empathy and work alongside our partners in care and research to stay at the forefront of cancer support.”
